Choosing live music for your wedding

The ceremony

What better to way to set the mood for the happiest day of your life than with enchanting, serene live music performed by first-rate musicians?

Live music helps to create a wonderful backdrop for the ceremony. It helps your guests to settle as they await the bride's entrance, which will be all the more impressive with the build up provided by live music.

Live musicians can also accompany hymns or songs during your ceremony, adding a touch of class and beauty to the your chosen pieces. The whole ceremony can be uplifted with the inclusion of beautiful music, ending by playing the happy couple out of the church or civil reception venue in a majestic crescendo. The music can continue whilst photographs are taken and can help to extend the enchanting atmosphere beyond the ceremony.

The reception

These days the evening reception/party is as an important part of the wedding day as the ceremony. The happy couple wants to let their hair down and celebrate there with friends and family and what better way to do so than with a superb live band. Forget dancing to the 'birdie song' with a cheesy DJ. And who wants to do the 'conga' any way? A live band adds levels of excitement, sophistication, entertainment and pure fun, which no DJ could compete with.

Many different styles of band can be suitable for weddings, entertaining guests of all ages. From a smooth jazz band that your friends can mooch and smooch to, through to a funky 70's or rock/pop party band that will keep your guests dancing all night, a good live band can transform your reception into the party of your life!

So what should I consider when choosing a live band?

Consider your guests

You will want the live music you choose for your wedding to appeal to all of your guests. When selecting music for the ceremony this is not usually a concern as the music is generally much lighter and used more for effect than entertainment. However, when choosing music for your evening reception you will need to consider the musical tastes of your guests, their age group and whether or not they will want to get up and dance or sit back, listen and continue to make conversation. We can use the following as a guide:

  • For an audience of all age groups- Pop Rock covers band, swing jive band, soul band, pop tribute band
  • For a middle aged audience- Pop covers band, selected tribute bands, 70's and funk bands, Soul & R&B bands, swing jive bands, Latin& salsa bands, jazz bands
  • For a mature audience (50+)- Jazz bands, rock n' roll bands, swing jive bands, selected tribute bands, Latin& salsa bands, 60's & light pop covers bands, classical ensembles
We can also use the following as a guide:

  • Bands to get people dancing- Pop & rock covers bands, swing jive bands, soul & R&B bands, Latin & salsa bands, selected tribute bands, 70's & funk bands, Irish bands, steel bands
  • Bands for back ground music- Jazz bands, classical ensembles, guitar solo and duos, harpists, pipers, pianists, singers, selected steel bands
Consider the pieces of music and songs

By the time you have chosen the style of band or artist you want to play at your wedding you will probably have an idea of what songs you'd like them to play.

In most cases the selection of songs or pieces of music that artists play will be left to their discretion. Good artists will be well experienced at suggesting music program's from their repertoire and will endeavor to tailor their performances to suit your requirements.

Requests

Should you have a specific piece of music or song in mind which you would like to have played at your wedding, you should make sure these suggestions are forwarded to your chosen agent/band well in advance. Most good bands will also allow you to specify which songs from their set list you most want them to play. Many bands set lists extend to over 3 or 4 hours worth of music so you should be able to have plenty of choice and a strong influence over which songs they play at your wedding.
