Weddings on a shoestring

Dressing up
Yes, you CAN look a million dollars without paying anywhere near that much! Many bridle wear manufacturers and designers specialize in very reasonably priced dresses, some for under $750, or you could opt for a worn-once dress (many bridal shops stock seconds), or even hire one. If you see a dress you like on a department store mannequin, ask when the sale starts and whether they'll be selling off sample dresses cheaply. And don't forget that if you do splash out on an expensive dress, you can always sell it afterwards.

A head for a bargain
To save on expensive cosmetics, invest in lots of two-in-one products (foundation/powder formulations and cheek-and-eye color) or find out when department stores are offering special offers such as a free lipstick when you buy a foundation. For a professional haircut, head to a salon's 'model night' to receive a free haircut by a supervised trainee. You might find a trainee to put your hair up on the morning too. Grooms can hire a head-to-toe outfit for under $150, a practical option if you're only likely to wear the suit on your wedding day. Alternatively, check out the high-street stores for a reasonably priced, modern suit that can be worn for work after the big day.

Your ceremony
You'll want to travel to your ceremony in style, so ask a friend with an unusual or sporty car to act as chauffeur for the day. Or cut down on transport costs by strolling to the church (if it's local) and then you and your guests can stroll on to your reception venue together.

Opt for seasonal flowers to keep costs down and either ask a friend to create your bouquet or do it yourself. The trend now is for very simple hand-tied posies often in one color - buy stems of your favorite flowers and tie with raffia.

Make sure you ask at your ceremony and reception venue whether any other weddings are taking place on the same day, or the day before. If so, you may be able to share the cost of the flowers.

Those extras often add up
Instead of expensive, printed place cards, use a gold pen to write names on polished pebbles, or use luggage labels tied to the stem of each glass.

Reduce your drinks' bill by buying bulk at wine warehouses or supermarkets, or make a day-trip to a French hypermarket for massive savings. For your toast, opt for an inexpensive 'method traditional' sparkling wine rather than Champagne, and then have a pay bar for the rest of the evening. If there's no bar at your venue you could ask all your guests to bring a bottle!

To get the party going, forgo the professional DJ and play your own tapes - buy or record your own compilations, or ask a wannabe DJ friend to do their stuff.
