Millennium grooms Last year's spate of celebrity weddings has given grooms bold ideas about what to wear on the big day. No longer content with taking a back seat to their brides and dressing in somber grays and black, Y2K grooms are puffing up their peacock feathers and giving their girls a run for their money. What's Hot The rough with the smooth The big trend for Y2K grooms is contrast, says men's outfitters Allan Kelly. Their customers will be stepping out in soft brocade patterned jackets teamed with plain waistcoats, or soft velvet jackets, paired with crisp high-collared shirts and flamboyant hand-tied shiny cravats. Color therapy This year's boldly well-dressed groom will be waiting for his bride dressed in a simple silver or charcoal-gray suit to reflect the new millennium, says Thomas Crown,. This will be jazzed up with a colorful waistcoat in lilac, bright purple, pastel pink or mint green, and teamed with a classic crisp white shirt and pastel-colored hand-tied cravat. Oh, the feel of it... Fabrics are soft and shiny. Think slub silks, velvets and crushed velvets - very glitzy and very touchy-feely. Linen will also be popular. Uppercut! Also in for this year are high-cut, four-button jackets that are tapered with a fitted waistline and a longer 3/4 length, which creates a clean and flattering silhouette. This look doesn't suit everyone, though. So if you want to wear this, but the rest of your entourage doesn't, Allan Kelly suggests opting for jackets made in the same fabric and color, but with different cuts to suit each member of your entourage. Wasting away Waistcoats remain as popular as ever. This year, they're fitted and single-breasted, with or without lapels, says groomswear designer Marc Wallace. Tying the knot In this 'anything goes' year, a popular new trend is the cravat tie-wrap, as worn by David Beckham. A mix between a tie and a cravat, it's much more modern than a traditional cravat and can be worn with a regular shirt, says designer Marc. What's Not? Groom fashion no-nos for the year 2000... Say goodbye to Nehru collars. Thomas Crown has noticed a distinct decline in this once popular look. Though it may always find favor with die-hard traditionalists, the morning suit is not the automatic choice it once was, says Marc Wallace. If it's not your kind of thing, have no qualms in plumping for a well-tailored suit. You'll still look fantastic on the day - and you'll get to wear it again. Last, but not least, forest green jackets are being cold-shouldered by millennium grooms too, says bridal shop Tickled Pink. |
